OpenClaw is a free, open-source AI agent that runs on your own server and talks to you through the messaging apps you already use: WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord and others. Unlike a chatbot, it acts. It can run commands, manage files, browse the web, handle email and calendars, and wake itself on a schedule to work unattended.
It became one of the fastest-growing open-source projects in GitHub history for a good reason: a persistent, personal agent that remembers context and actually does things is genuinely useful, for one person or for a whole team.
The catch is in the power. An agent that can execute commands and read files needs the same care you would give any system with that access. The one-line installer gets it running; running it safely is a different job, and that is the job we do.

OpenClaw's power comes from real access: it executes commands, reads files and browses on your behalf. Security researchers have already catalogued what goes wrong when it is installed carelessly. None of it is a reason to avoid the tool; all of it is a reason to install it properly.
Contained by default
The agent runs in its own isolated environment with nothing else on it. If something goes wrong, the blast radius is the sandbox, not your laptop, your network or your business.
Least privilege, always
Command allowlists, scoped credentials and no exposed ports. The agent gets exactly the access its job requires and nothing speculative, and unknown senders are ignored entirely.

Can I install OpenClaw myself?
Yes, and many people do; the installer is a single command. The hard part is not installation but safe operation: isolating the agent, restricting what it can execute, protecting your API keys, keeping up with a fast-moving project, and knowing which community skills are safe to add. That is the part people underestimate, and it is the part we sell.
Is OpenClaw safe to run?
It is as safe as its installation. By design the agent can run commands, read files and browse the web, so a careless setup on an exposed machine is a genuine risk, and security researchers have documented the failure patterns. Properly contained, with least-privilege access, strict sender pairing and monitored operation, it is a tool like any other powerful tool: safe in proportion to the discipline around it.
What do I need to run it?
A small server is enough for most uses: a modest VPS or a spare machine such as a Mac mini, plus an API key from an AI provider (you pay the provider directly for usage). We size this with you during scoping. If you would rather not own any of it, our managed hosting runs the whole thing for a monthly fee.
Which AI models does it work with?
OpenClaw is model-agnostic: you bring your own key from any major provider, or run local models on your own hardware. We configure your preferred provider at setup, and switching later is part of maintenance, not a new project.
Where does my data live?
OpenClaw is local-first: its memory and configuration live as files on the machine it runs on, which is one of the reasons to like it. On your server, that machine is yours. On our managed hosting, it is a UK-based machine dedicated to you, with backups, and we work under NDA. Conversations still pass through your chosen AI provider, as with any agent; we configure which provider and explain exactly what they see.
Should I choose OpenClaw or Hermes Agent?
They are similar in spirit and we install both. OpenClaw has the larger community and skill ecosystem; Hermes Agent, built by Nous Research, focuses on persistent memory and skills that improve with use, and includes a supported migration path from OpenClaw. The honest answer depends on what you want the agent to do, and the comparison is part of scoping, not a sales pitch for either.
